Whether its people were ailing before these infestations or afterward ultimately isn’t terribly important. What matters is that by the time players find them, every person and rat there has been driven mad by the Frenzied Flame. But what actually happened in this little corner of the Lands Between? 🐀🔥

A Quiet Village Turned Nightmare

The Ailing Village feels different from many other danger zones in Elden Ring. It isn’t guarded by a demigod or a giant monster. Instead, it is overrun by frenzied villagers and rats. The villagers attack on sight, their minds clearly broken. The rats swarm in packs, their eyes glowing with the same yellow madness. This is not a place of ordinary sickness. It is a place consumed by the Frenzied Flame.

What Is the Frenzied Flame?

The Flame of Frenzy inflicts madness onto those it graces. Controlled by an Outer God and the Maddening Three Fingers, the Frenzied Flame is a force that seeks to destroy all of the world and return it to what it once was. That original state is known as the Crucible, the singular substance that built the world of Elden Ring. While the Frenzied Flame is capable of destroying everything, it does not always use that power. Instead, it drives those it infects to worship it and embrace its power and mission. That is exactly what players see in Ailing Village, and it is also clearly seen in another Elden Ring community known as Frenzied Flame Village.

A Telling Comparison

The comparison between Ailing Village and Frenzied Flame Village is an apt one. Both worship the Frenzied Flame. Both were afflicted by it because of outsiders. The latter was more clearly infected because of Fingerprint Vyke’s presence. The former, however, could have been infected because of the swarm of rats that took over the community. The story is hidden in the landscape, the creatures, and the architecture.

The Underground Infection of Ailing Village

The Three Fingers live deep beneath the surface of the Lands Between. They likely dwell underground in much the same way as rats, whose in-game description says they enjoy living in the underground dungeons of Elden Ring. Right next to Ailing Village sits Morne Tunnel, a perfect underground passage. It is therefore likely that the rats became infected with the Frenzied Flame while underground. Then they carried it up into the village. This theory fits because the rats have not scattered randomly. They have made their main den in the town’s church, the Callu Baptismal Church.

The Church as a Symbol

The Callu Baptismal Church was built around a Marika shrine. It was once meant for the worship of the Golden Order, the opposite force of the Frenzied Flame. The fact that the infected rats primarily congregate in this area is hugely symbolic. It suggests the rats were responsible for swaying the villagers away from Grace. More literally, it suggests they infected worshippers right where they gathered. Elden Ring mirrors this in Frenzied Flame Village, where Vyke is located in the Church of Inhibition. The two locations share the same dark pattern.

More Evidence from the Ground

There is even more evidence linking Ailing Village’s infection to the underground. The Eye of Yelough plants, which are related to Frenzied Flame infection, are literally growing from the soil of the Ailing Village. That means the ground itself is afflicted with madness. The presence of another underground creature, the Slender Wayfarer, only strengthens this connection. It is also possible that the rats received the Frenzied Flame from another source, perhaps from eating the Eye of Yelough. Either way, the end result seems to have been inevitable.
